Two reasons move us to do this, and both were born from what we’ve witnessed firsthand over years of working alongside the producing communities of Huayopata.

The first reason is practical. In the region’s rural schools, the government covers teachers’ salaries and infrastructure upkeep, but educational materials depend largely on what families themselves can afford. School libraries, when they exist, tend to have few books, little variety, and rare renewal. Children lack access to the range of reading they need to spark curiosity and widen their view of the world.

There’s a national policy to promote reading, but that policy needs books to work. Bringing a book eases the financial burden on families and helps build a library with real diversity — stories, science, geography, history, nature — that no child should have to ask permission to read.

The second reason runs deeper, and we learned it from the families themselves. Over the years, we’ve witnessed something that repeats across the coffee and cacao-growing communities of La Convención: the children of producers who gained access to better education — who went on to technical institutes or universities — returned to their communities with a different way of seeing the very work their parents had always done.

Their parents grew coffee because it was what they knew. They did it with effort and dedication, but without the tools to understand the value chain, differentiated quality, business management, or market opportunities. In many cases, it was subsistence farming.

Their children, though, saw the same land from a different angle — and saw an opportunity. They began talking about quality, process, branding, fair pricing. Some started producing specialty coffee. Others turned cacao into value-added products. Others opened small businesses on the very same land their parents had always worked. The land was the same. The difference was education.

We believe that path begins long before university. It begins the moment a child picks up a book out of curiosity, finds a world within its pages they didn’t know existed, discovers there are more possibilities than what surrounds them. A well-stocked library guarantees no one’s success, but it opens a door that would otherwise stay closed.

That’s why we carry books. Because we’ve seen what education can do for a community. And because we believe that transformation begins with a child’s curiosity in front of a book.

It’s a moment travelers remember as vividly as the taste of freshly roasted coffee or handmade artisan chocolate.

The families of Huayopata open their land, their work, and their knowledge to us. They show us how the coffee the world drinks and the cacao the world enjoys are born. That gesture deserves a response worthy of it.

We believe tourism carries a responsibility to leave something positive in every place it touches. Not just money that circulates, but impact that stays: in children who read, in families whose effort is recognized, in communities that grow with every traveler who passes through.
