Over one billion people worldwide consume chocolate not having any idea about the origins of this delicacy. Our interactive Cusco Cocoa farm experience will show and inform you all about how this aphrodisiac is grown, harvested, and produced in the world-famous Inca Valley in Peru.

If you don’t have a lot of time to spare in Cusco but are very interested in learning more about organic cocoa and sweet chocolate production and meeting a native family, then this interactive Cocoa Farm Tour 1D is for you! On this single-day tour directed by a professional local guide, you will learn all about the native cocoa farmers from start to finish. You will also have time over a home-cooked lunch to sit and get to know the family, and get all of your cocoa-related questions answered!

For embarking on this tour from Cusco, you will need to be ready to go at an early hour; it takes approximately four hours to drive to the farm. However, If you would like to start this tour from Ollantaytambo (the town where tours to Machu Picchu start/end), we can arrange this for you, and it will cut off about 2 hours of travel time.

Itinerary

Cocoa Farm Tour 1-Day tour Itinerary:

Cusco or Sacred Valley to Huayopata

We can start this journey in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Ollantaytambo and Urubamba town in the Sacred Valley are ideal starting points. Additional charges may apply for hotels located away from the main towns. The cost will depend on your hotel’s location.

05:00	Pick up from your hotel to start your journey.
06:30	if your hotel is located in Ollantaytambo the reference pick-up time is 6:30 am
09:00	Arrival at the local farm, where a member of the family will give you a grand tour. They will explain the work that is performed on the farm, and show you the range of products that are harvested to support their family. Here, you will also be able to taste the available fruit in season! This locally owned and run farm is a small one that pertains to a cooperative organization in accordance with fair trade practices, therefore, it has been granted organic certification. During this initial tour of the larger farm and cocoa plantation, you will come to truly appreciate all of the hard work and stages that go into preparing a bar of chocolate or an artisanal cup of hot cocoa!
12:00	Lunch on the farm! (Locally prepared family-style dishes). If you would like to try a local specialty meal, guinea pig, for example, we can coordinate with the family ahead of time and pay them directly upon arrival. Additionally, please let us know in advance if you are a vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions.
13:00	Interactive demonstration on roasting and grinding cocoa beans, where you will have the opportunity to taste fresh cocoa with different ingredients, as well as prepare your own cup of hot cocoa.
15:30	Begin the drive back to Cusco after a brief break soaking in the countryside.
18:00	Arrival in Ollantaytambo, if your destination is this town. you can take the train to Machu Picchu from here.
19:30	Arrival in Cusco and transfer to your hotel. the arrival time will be subject to traffic conditions.

Machu Picchu +1D

We can arrange to extend the Cocoa Farm Tour 1D for one more day to include a trip to Machu Picchu. If you choose this option, the extended itinerary will follow this schedule:

After lunch on day 1, we will bid farewell to the family and continue on our way to the train station, where we will travel to the town of Aguas Calientes and arrive at approximately 6 pm. You will have the night to spend at your leisure in your hostel (basic accommodation with hot water – can be upgraded if requested). In your hostel, your guide will explain what the tour for the next day entails and afterward, you can relax in the hot springs of Aguas Calientes!

Machu Picchu

On the morning of day 2, we will take about a 30-minute bus ride to Machu Picchu. We will visit the citadel of Machu Picchu for a few hours with your guide, and then you will have some time to explore the magical complex on your own and take photos. You will also have time to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain at an additional costs. Either the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain entrance ticket is purchased at the same time as the Machu Picchu entrance, and we recommend purchasing these tickets in advance, because there are limited spaces.

After lunch on your own outside of Machu Picchu (food is not allowed in the citadel), you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes for your return trip to Cusco. You will know your exact train schedule as soon as we buy your train ticket. You will arrive in Cusco by bus at approximately 10:00 pm.
