Sacred Valley – Coffee or Cocoa Plantation Tour Description

Discover the Sacred Valley and find out on a coffee or cacao plantation tour how this region supports the growing global demand for coffee and cacao. Enjoy the valley of the Incas, and admire the magnificent Inca constructions at Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Then visit a local farm and family who will teach you about traditional agriculture and the region’s signature crops. You’ll get to know the family firsthand and learn about their deep, generations-old knowledge of coffee or cacao — and the full process each goes through, from harvest to cup or bar. You’ll also get to try other local produce and seasonal fruit grown on the farm.

If your ultimate destination is Machu Picchu, we can help you extend this tour in that direction — with drop-off included as far as Santa María, from where you can continue independently toward Hidroeléctrica and Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town).

    Itinerary

Day1: Cusco – Sacred Valley – Coffee or Cocoa Plantation tour

    • Pick-up time: 7:00 AM for the Regular Sacred Valley route, or 6:30 AM for the Super Valle route.
    • For group tours, you can choose your Sacred Valley route:
      • Regular Sacred Valley (7:00 AM pick-up): visit the market town and archaeological site of Pisac, then Ollantaytambo — a classic introduction to the valley’s history and Inca engineering.
      • Super Valle (6:30 AM pick-up): a more complete route through Chinchero (Andean weaving community), Moray (the Inca’s circular agricultural terraces), Salineras de Maras (the ancestral salt pans), and Ollantaytambo.
    • Afternoon — After an optional buffet lunch in Urubamba (see restaurant options and prices below), we’ll continue on to explore Ollantaytambo’s impressive Incan ruins and walk through the town itself — one of the few in Peru that still preserves its original Inca urban layout.
    • From there, we’ll travel roughly three hours by private or public vehicle to the farm, where a local family will welcome you. On arrival, enjoy a short walk through the property, share dinner with the family, and settle into your private room (hot water included).

Day 02: Huayopata – Ollantaytambo or Cusco

    • Morning — After breakfast with the family, it’s time to choose your farm experience: coffee or cacao — both grown side by side on this same organic, fair-trade certified farm.
      • Choose coffee, and you’ll learn how the region’s signature crop goes from cherry to cup: harvesting, processing, and preparing your own coffee using traditional, artisanal methods.
      • Choose cacao, and you’ll follow the pod from tree to bar: harvesting cacao pods, fermenting and drying the beans, and trying your hand at making chocolate the traditional way.
    • Either way, you’ll also get to taste seasonal local fruit and see other tropical crops grown on the farm, like coca and tea.
    • Afternoon — After lunch, we’ll say goodbye to the family and begin the return journey to Ollantaytambo or Cusco — just let us know your final destination in advance. The trip takes about 3 hours to Ollantaytambo, or 4 hours to Cusco.

Note: This tour is budgeted as a round-trip, 2-day program returning to Ollantaytambo or Cusco. If you plan to continue on to Machu Picchu, we can drop you off in Santa María, from where you can continue independently toward Hidroeléctrica and on to Aguas Calientes. Transport all the way to Hidroeléctrica is available at an additional cost — let us know in advance if you’d like this option, and we’ll quote it for you.
